There are many leisure activities we all enjoy, but television is one of the best kept secrets that we enjoy every day. But when comes the time that you are addicted to television and how do you tell? On average American adults watch a shocking 26-30 hours a week of television. Here are our hints on how to tell when you’re watching too much television.

Research has stated that we have become dependant on watching television, we rely on it to ward off boredom, company and to generally keep us entertained. They have proven that it makes us lazy as we are more prone to gaining weight and our intelligence level also drops. So if television is so bad for us, then how do we cut back?

Step 1. Cold turkey.
If you’re really dedicated you can go cold turkey, this means no television for 2 weeks. Try it and you will notice how much spare time you have. The programs you thought you would miss, you won’t even think about. Start a new habit of spending time with family or friends when you would usually watch television for 2 hours.

Step 2. Gradual cut down to zero.
This is for those of you who are more interested in a gradual approach rather than radical one. For a week write down how many hours you spend watching television. Over the next month try to cut that amount in half. On a weekly basis record how many hours you watch then divide it by two – this is your tv allowance for the week. This is a great way to form new habits and make you aware of how much time you spend in front of the square box. Once you have this part mastered you can cut it out all together.

Step 3. Divide your hours in half.
This is for those of you tho think you can’t live without television. Over the period of two months try to cut the hours that you watch television in half. Same as step 2 – write down your hours then give your self an allowance for the week and the month. Make it a competition within the family to try and get your hours down, then you can do something fun at the end as a prize. You will be surprised at how much family time you will have and how much you don’t miss watching television.
