Because of the increasing rate of RSI, manufacturers are coming up with new and improved computer furniture that is ergonomically better than the last version. Latest in the market is the ergonomic keyboard. Ergonomic keyboards in the market today are designed as split keyboards.

Split keyboards solve the problem that is related to the muscle and tendons at the wrist in which the swelling of the metacarpophalangeal joints which causes the fingers to become displaced to the ulnar side.

For most people, regular keyboards work just well as there is no research available that split keyboards have helped combat RSI- the only difference is for people who have felt pain, split keyboards work great for them than traditional ones.

If you like and prefer using a split keyboard, then there is a selection and arrangement criteria that you would have to follow. These vital factors are such as height of the keyboard as well as the distance between you and the keyboard and finally the usage. Here are some guidelines for ergonomic keyboards:

1)    Ensure that the keyboard is placed right in front of you.
2)    Keep your elbows close to your body and the shoulders relaxed
3)    Wrists have to be kept straight and in-line with your forearms
4)    Use a chair that can be adjusted to a comfortable height so that you do not stress your legs or arm muscles when typing

Seating in front of the workstation has to be looked into as well. The height of the chair and your work surface needs to be adjusted to an optimum distance and height to avoid any slouching or tensing of muscles. Your elbows need to be hanging comfortably to the side of your body with shoulders in a relaxed position. This ensures that your wrists do not bend up or down while typing. Also, your work surface shouldn’t be more than 2 inches.

Most ergonomic keyboards have adjustable trays that you can adjust to give you the proper height and tilt it to give you enough leg space as well as to input other devices. As a general rule, the vertical position of the keyboard should be maintained within the recommended range. The tilts on ergonomic keyboards can be raised or lowered using the keyboard feet to maintain straight, neutral wrist postures while making slight changes in arm angles.

Keyboard positions often result in RSI for the shoulders and wrist. Studies have shown that awkward positions in front of the keyboard generally lead to ergonomic disorders for the elbows, hands, shoulders and definitely the wrists.

Whether you use a traditional keyboard or an ergonomic keyboard, practicing good posture, movement and making sure frequent breaks are taken to stretch muscles and improve blood circulation will ensure that you do not get symptoms that develop into RSI. Precautions taken will avoid complications of RSI in the future and you will experience no pain at all even if you have to do repetitive wor.
